There is no equivalent. You can run the Win9x version of msconfig under W2K, just ignore the error messages. I recommend though a free proggie called "startup control panel". You can find it easily in google. Use it to control what windows starts up and it also monitors when proggies try to add startup routines to the registry.

ty fawlty :-)
ok, so there's no startup tab. But there MUST be a way to disable a program from loading in the systray w/o completely uninstalling the program--like the registry...is there a program startup in the regedit?
i find it hard to believe that MS would not find a recourse for a crowded systray (which can problematic).
while software can be a solution, i rarely go that route. with billions of SW progs. out there, i'm sure i can find one out there to wipe my a**, but i prefer to wipe my own. even shareware/freeware takes time to install, reboot, read the instructions, learn the interface, put up with it's quirks & shortcomings, using up 100% resources, etc.--i'd rather manhandle my unit.

Oh my friend, then there is nothing much you can do. Especially with Win2K as OS. Somewhere you will have to take help of third party softies to make your job VERY easy. Visit www.jv16.org and download RegCleaner. It has got startup tab as well as backup part which is also very easy to use.

You can do a searck for "msconfig for W2K" and use that file once you find it. Copy it to the C:\WINNT\System32 folder and you can run it from the "Run" box just as you would in any other Windows version. The Win98 version will work but as mention before, you will get an error message everytime you run it. The W2K version is actually extracted from Windows XP, so if you have access to an XP computer you can simply copy it.
Otherwise there is Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) which does what msconfig does and much more available for free to download.
