Any answers or pointing me in the right direction would help.

The drive is probably a brand name of some kind. Quite possibly a Pioneer or Toshiba if it is a DVD-R drive. Check the sticker on the drive and see what it says on it (i.e. ID numbers like DVR-105, DVR-104, ect.) It will be a lot easier to help you once we know what kind of drive it actaully is. Have you actually plugged it in yet and just not been able to get it to work? Nero should work on pretty much any burner as well as Stomp Recordnow Max. As for DVD-R media any disc with a dark purple Ritek dye is considered to be amoung the best for overall compatibility, and reliability. I hope this helps.

I think you may find it's a Pioneer 104 2 speed drive.

DVD-RAM is all you can use then. Which is probably why he gave it to you.

Yeah it could be an early model that was DVD-RAM only and that would be why the drive was a freebee.
