The cheapest are usually the crappiest.
Save some money and get a decent one like pioneer.

Also you're asking in the wrong forum dude.

For 9Rivers that is not true. The Cendyne (Pioneer with a different label on it) is around $180 after tax and mail-in rebate when you can find it on special at Officemax or Staples and is one of the cheapest DVD burners out there. For M_l@w you might want to talk to 420 before ordering from Newegg as he recently had a nasty experience with them. I believe he has the signature "Newegg isn't all they are cracked up to be". Since you are in the UK though I would highly recommend the Pioneer105 (Unless you can find the aforementioned Toshiba for a bit cheaper). The 105 will run you around 200 pounds. Also what will you be backing up (movies, data, games)?

People are just beginning to say good things about the new Panasonic drive, which SVP are doing for £149.99.

It's only a 2 speed drive, but it's cheap see here :

Me and my friend both got a cendyne and we paid 250 for it, after a 50 dollar instant rebate and tax and not including the 50 dollar mail in rebate. it's been more then 4 month and we still havn't gotten our rebate.

Mail in Rebate is a different story, if you're talking out the door, then the cendyne is around 230-300 dollar. He's asking what's the cheapest burner and there are a couple no name brand you can get for around 150-170 which are crap.

Yea, I also got a cendyne and it's been more then 3 month since I got a reply in an email they got my rebate. Still no rebate has come yet and I don't seem to even care about it any more. I wouldn't say cendyne are the cheapest since I paid around 250 for one, it just seem cheap when they advertise it and put the price after mail in rebate to make more people buy it. It's a money market strategy, otherwise no one would pick one up.

True I submitted my rebate in January and got mine at the first of this month. I agree that the process is long but then again most rebates are. Still though After the tax and the rebate (that finally got here) it ended up costing me $180 and I don't have the issue reading G03 Ritek discs that some of the Toshiba users are reporting trouble with. I live and die by Ritek since my players are media picky so the Toshiba wouldn't do me any good.

if u live in the US, there's one this week for around 83 bucks after rebate, basicly u try to price match Office Max price, with Out post price. Then there's a coupon and rebate that would take the price down to 83, i think the rebate is only like 20 bucks, so if u don't get it back the deal is still pretty good. The hard thing is to talk to the Office Max people so that they'll price match for u.

4x Pioneers need a better firmware but I think they might have come out with it. 4x media is still very expensive.

I saw tigerdirect has a panasonic -r for $169, which includes a coupon for dvdxcopy worth about $100 or sell on ebay for about $70.

For handyguy, they have come out with a 2x4all firmware hack finally. A few people report problems with it (there are always going to be people who have trouble no matter how well put together it is) but all in all it is a success. I only have the Ritek firmware hack (since I am only concerned with Ritek discs) and it works beautifully.
