I am unable to flash my matrix chip. When I put it with the programmer on the LP1 port I get the red lcd. When I try to flash it, the light goes off and I get a device not found error. what am I doing wrong?

Are you using a brand new fully charged 9V Battery? I have heard that there is serious trouble if you don't use a BRAND NEW 9V Battery during the flash process.

just to let you know, i kept getting "error erasing chip" at the same stage in the process. i was using a brand new alkaline battery as i was told to do. after a few fits, i ended trying an old, half-dead battery out of my smoke detector and VIOLA! it worked perfectly.

The first matrix I got was fcked and refused to program, so that also could be an option :)

Like Cleo2525 said - put the matrix on the programmer, insert the programmer into the parallel port and then physically press the matrix to the programmer during the flash procedure.
Keep them really well pressed together from start to end and everything should be ok.
