DIABLO Apr 12, 2003, 10:05 AM What do you use your system for? Which way do you want to go AMD or INTEL?
duffy90210 Apr 12, 2003, 10:08 AM I will move this to Consumers Forum...

padawan Apr 12, 2003, 11:20 AM Well start with your motherboard then go off of that...either ATX or MicroATX form factor.
Grab a mobo that supports that type of cpu (amd or intel) u want, gotta have the right socket for it ya know...Make sure your mobo supports the speed of the cpu
you're going to get...then get a good heatsink and fan for the cpu...also make sure u get all the expansion slots u want(pci, agp, cmr)...onboard stuff if u want that stuff...
Buy the ram that supports your motherboard....ddr is better to get than sdram...
Next grab a case that will support your mobo...either ATX or MicroATX case...i usually get mid tower atx cases...since u can fit atx mobos in there or microatx mobos in there and they are not too big...but u can't fit an atx mobo in a microatx case...i also usually buy a case that already has the power supply in there...grab 350-400W if u can...300W is ok too....also i usually buy a case that has at least 1 case fan in there, usually an exhaust fan, then i put an intake fan in the front....keeps it a lot cooler.
After that, all u gotta do is put a hard drive in there, your drives and agp/pci cards....and that's it...i always clear the cmos when i 1st get a mobo but that's just me...set up the bios, slap on OS on it, presto.
Hit www.newegg.com for all of this stuff....
DIABLO Apr 12, 2003, 11:57 AM "hi m8, what im looking for is very high performance pc, maybe dual proccessor mobo, amd or intel doesnt bother me, just whatveer offers me better performance/internal cache im using it for dvd editing/burning, i want to be able to use 2 dvd burners at the same time and also edit dvds, as u can tell i need a very high spec pc, with alot of fans etc"
Can you afford to go SCSI?
Part's of the top of my head:
Case:Antec Plus 1080AMG Metallic Gray File Server
GFX:Ge-force 4 MX
garythebeaut Apr 12, 2003, 12:20 PM i would go for an Abit motherboard, definately the best. And get an AMD XP CPU. Depends on what u wanna spend really. Abit boards are great for overclocking aswell so if u fancy that in the future u will have the ability to.
Get an IBM Hard Drive, size depends on what u will do/want so u'll know better than me, say 60Gig IBM or something. They come with a 3 year guarantee which is really good. I had one break after 2 and a bit years, i went to the IBM site and its briiliant, u put in the serial number on the hard drive and then u send it off, get a brand new one!
They are very fast aswell. If you check out h**p://www.tomshardware.com there u will see reviews on all the latest hardware and u can decide for urself.
Next, get an Nvidia graphics card like a GeForce. They are very good and drivers are always readily available. I remember when I got a Voodoo and a week later they ceased buisness cos they couldnt cope with Nvidia, they are the leader in the graphics market so, get one!
Monitor, flat or normal, tell me and i'll tell u what to look out for.
Case, get a good one with PSU, if u can afford to. If not, at least try and get an Enermax PSU, they are the best and really quite with adjustable fans on them, really good.
If ur m/board has sound then keep it and see how it is, if its crap get a Soundblaster, just read up and see what their latest is. Again, drivers are always there and they wont go bankrupt on u!
floppy drive, any
dont get a CDrom drive, get a DVD drive or a CDwriter, they read CD's but do more, and cost the same or only a tad more
Logitech or Microsoft Mouse and keyboard, ur choice
Get a good heatsink and fan but not too loud, check the noise rating.
Ok, well thats about it, Try h**p://www.theoverclockingstore.com
they sell good quality stuff only and at good prices, and h**p://www.ebuyer.com for cheap deals.
good luck
1k memory Apr 12, 2003, 01:10 PM i have plenty of cash, within reason, ok i know i was a bit vague earlier, sorry, heres what i will be doing on my system
at the moment i have a laptop with a pioneer 105 in an external case but my business at camp has really took off and my laptop is crap for this kinda work, anyway
i want to be able to fit it with 2 pioneers and 2 dvdroms and run them at the same time, like DIABLO mentioned earlier SCSI ive heard that this is very fast but comes at a price, other than that i dont know much.
i also will be doing video editing as well maybe at the same time, so i will need a fast CPU, ive haerd that u can buy mobos that u can fit dual proccessor to so can increase the speed or your systemand cache, but i dont really know much about that either, im looking for a video card which i will probably get a the Nividia card, ram im looking for DDR, im pretty clued up on everything ecept mobo and proccessor and which case to get and what fans to get
i hope u can help me
regards 1k
1k memory Apr 12, 2003, 01:57 PM ive been looking around and came accross Tiger MP (S2460) it seems really good, istheir any other mobo thats better?
DIABLO Apr 12, 2003, 03:51 PM I personnally would go for a P4 system if you doing encoding or that sort of thing as they are faster for that sort of thing plus your system will be quieter because P4's run cooler so you won't need so many case fans. The case (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Antec_160.html) i reccomended will be big enough for you need's plus it looks nice and alows for plenty of cooling protential if you want to run that many IDE devives you will have to get a motherboard with a on-board RAID contoller or you will have to buy a PCI IDE card. You may want to consider a P4 with hypertheading tecnology which turns 1 pentium 4 processor into 2 virtual processors as to get the most out of the processor. O ther then that m8 i can't really help a get deal as don't know alot about P4 single/Dual cpu motherboards or about SCSI.
1k memory Apr 12, 2003, 06:03 PM cananyone advise me on which mobo to get to fit 2 cpu's i really havnt got a clue whe it comes to this, are their any experts out their?
BigStan Apr 12, 2003, 06:49 PM Hi 1k mate, long time no see :)
I wouldnt bother with multi processing for everyday use. Forget that idea if I was you.
I would purchase the following if I was building me a pc :D
Abit nf7s (rev 2.0) nforce 2 motherboard (£100ish)
Athlon 1700 t'bred (£45) whoch can be overclocked hugely on the above board, ask more if needed. These 1700's will do 2.2Ghz easily on air cooling, which is roughly the speed of an athlon 2800xp I think. But for a fraction of the price.
Or get an athlon 2600/2700/2800 for (£150 - £250) whatever the going prices are.
Get however much ram you like (512 or 1Gb but get pc3200 standard, its faster)
Ive had many a debate on here with others about graphics card. I own a geforce 4, which seem to be popular choices. I personally would go for a radeon 9700 pro if you can afford it (price should drop as 9800pro has just come out). I wouldnt bother with an nvidia card, unless you really want to.... But a radeon 9500pro will give any nvidia card out at the mo a run for the money. You could wait for a new n35 nvidia card to come out if you so wished. Up to you.
Get a large hard drive, I would choose 160Gb or 200Gb.
Then whatever ide devices you like, dvd drive, dvd writer etc. Remember that the motherboard will hold 4 ide devices, hard drive is one so allow for three others.
Get a decent Psu, 400W or greater. I have found thermaltake quiet 420W psu to be great, for £40.
The motherboard has really good onboard sound, so dont bother buying a soundcard on top, spend it on some good speakers.
A nice 17" tft if can be afforded......
Wireless kb and mouse :)
Hows that sir? :D
1k memory Apr 13, 2003, 05:08 AM lo bigstan, ive been talking to a m8 in the chat room and he can get me a good deal on a system like u descriped, without the Graphics card but i can get that another time, thanx anyway m8
Take Care BS, regards 1k
BigStan Apr 13, 2003, 12:33 PM A graphicsr card shouldnt be a problem mate, but its in one of those phases where big changes are happening. You could get a geforce4, but in a few months it would be pretty obselete. A radeon 9500pro would cut the pace with its AA features, a rad 9700pro would be good, but price should drop shortly.
MasterMind Apr 13, 2003, 02:25 PM Old friends.... 1K and BS at one place.... too good. :)
1k m8, BS has given you a superb config. Just go for it mate; and yes forget about dual processing. Really not required unless you are planning to run Web Server in real near future. :)
BigStan Apr 14, 2003, 10:39 AM Shame I can't get Irc to run at uni :(
