My burner will be here Friday and I was trying to pick up a few 2x capable dvd-rw disks so I can avoid wasting my first few burns. Most places I have checked don't seem to say what speed they write at and I still don't know what brands are even that great. It will be for the sony dru-500 drive, so I could also try dvd+rw 2.4x disks. I'm in the US, so I'm looking for places here if possible. Also, any recommendations for some decently priced 2x capable dvd-r media? Seems a lot of the generic type brands are capable of 2x on this drive. Thanks.

For veekay you do realise that there is a good chance that your DVD player won't read DVD-RW in the first place right? Your sony should play them just fine on your computer though. Might I suggest www.meritline.com, www.rima.com, www.allmediaoutlet.com for starters.

Yeah, most of my backups will just be data, so computer only. I'd just rather mess around with rewritable than potentially waste regular dvd's.
