Included with my new PC system was a BenQ CD writer (52x24x52). This is connected as slave on the primary channel. Burning cd's with Nero 5.5.9 is fine!
The problem is here . When formatting a new CDRW the drive starts to format it normally (using the format option under WinXP which is supplied by Roxio) and after 20 mins of formatting and not yet complete the drive reports an error: you cannot access this medium , the drive reported an error. The medium then becomes unreadable! I already tried 2 different top brands and made 4 CDRWs useless!

I downloaded the latest firmware but no improvments. When I contacted BenQ they told me to install the drive on the secondary channel as slave and making the DVD-Rom as master on the secondary channel too. Didnt try this yet . Cant make more CDRWs useless! Do you think this solves my problem? Or is the drive damaged?

I'd be very surprised if the CDRW's are physically damaged. The cabling suggested by Benq is OK but I don't think this is causing the problem. Have you tried burning any other way? Download Nero & give it a go. It won't format the drive (for that you need packet writing software like DirectCD or INCD) but you can burn and see if it works. If Nero works but you still want packet writing (so you can write to CD as if it was a HDD) borrow a copy of Easy CD creator which includes DirectCD. If DirectCD works then go & buy it to use instead of the WinXP version (which is very limited). If still no go then you might have a faulty drive which the supplier should be able to replace or at least check it in another PC.
