I am about to buy a new CD-Writer for my computer and I am able to get a BTC BCE 3212IM on special. I see it has a 2 sheep rating, but don't know anyone who has used these drives for backup making. Are they any good? Will they backup latest SD2 and Securom games?

I could save my pennies for twice as long and buy a Lite-On LTR-52246S, but I have heard this drive is not the best for reading sub-channel data. Quoting from a CDFreaks article:

"Older SecuROM *new* titles could easily be backuped by copying subchannel data. WarCraft 3 has a more advanced SecuROM version (not the latest one!), which requires a very good subchannel reader to get a perfect backup. The disc has been read with CloneCD. The backup worked in the burner itself, but it failed in a Pioneer DVD-115! Lowering read speed didn't help. When using a Toshiba SD-M1502 as reader, the backup worked. So the new LiteOn drive is not a good subchannel reader for CloneCD."

The more research I do the more confused I get, and I have done a lot of research . If you can tell me about a good writer to buy please do!!! Thanks.

Thanks Stevie Boy. I have done google searches. That is always my first step. I have read lots of reviews. I just want to know if anyone has used the BTC 3212IM for making successful 1:1 backups of protected software like Unreal Tournament, Battlefield 1942. No review I can find has tested this. So please, if you have a BTC burner, let me know how it is.

I found a good up-to-date list of burners for anyone interested:

Even lists 2 "3-sheep" burners. The BTC is on the list so I guess it is OK.
