hello. I have a version 7 ps2 with a messiah2 and I watch dvd-r movies on my ps2. I hear that if you watch movies or play games on cheap media than the laser will wear down and not work. I would rather not invest in another $100 chip and installation service. So is this true and how long will my laser last if i watch movies and stuff. Thakns

As long as it is on quality DVD-R it shouldn't be a problem. The big trouble comes in with games that have been ripped from DVD to fit on a CD. Steer clear of ripped games for best results. The version 7 is supposed to have a much stronger laser than the previous version PS2s. So stick to quality DVD-R for movies and games and I don't think you will have a problem.

I use CDr's and have had 2 Playstations that keep going and going... that's DVDrips. So it's just what you can afford or want to do. Don't miss out just because you can't get DVDr or don't have a DVD recorder... if you do go for the DVDr.....

Same here..i think rips killing the laser is a myth. the kids have been playing rips on my ps2 for a few years and it still works fine. i have a dvd burner too, but 90% of games ain't even worth wasting a blank cdr on.

i've been playing a ton of rips...it hasn't caused me any probs. I have a v5 ps2. The main reason people say that rips are dangerous is because you can hear the laser moving alot. But i can hear my laser moving with anything cd based....including original cd based ps2 games and also ps1 games

Yeah ritek and fuji are good quality but princos arnt so great they still work but just cheap. verbatim and appl era eht e 2 recommended medias for high quality but riteks are recomended for games that dont require high quality media like some games do.

Yeah... go with what you like and one thing is for sure and was said before, most of the game backups aren't worthy of a DVDr.... Sad but true... :(

I have my ps2 v1 with neo 2.5 for over a year and never had a problem, and all I play are dvd rips and some of them on silver , but my daughter uses the ps2 for watching movies mostly and still keeps going. So for me the chip media thing does not exist. So just go with whatever you can afford.

IMO it also depends on the quality of the CDr Media.

Some think that rips kill the laser but I've been using MEMOREX on my ps2 for a long time and it's still perfect. Personally I would steer clear from watching DVD movies on my ps2. It's a gaming system to me, not a DVD player. I'd much rather watch my DVDs on a Progressive Scan player anyways so I get Hi Def.
