m_allen1 Apr 19, 2003, 12:34 PM My V4 PS2 reads CDs but will not read any type of DVD (even retail games and movies). It is probably not the laser, since I put in a new laser and it still does not work. Anyone know what the problem could be (someone mentioned dvd controller points in another thread) and how to fix it?
m_allen1 Apr 21, 2003, 11:38 AM Anyone?
pepsik Apr 21, 2003, 11:56 AM Sounds like laser, if it was your dvd controller points you would get the disk to read, but the disk would read very slowly and usually fail in mid-operation.
Jaice Apr 21, 2003, 02:34 PM laser could be going
m_allen1 Apr 21, 2003, 04:17 PM No, I'm pretty sure it's not the laser, since realigning the laser and putting in a brand new laser did not work
martin_3_8 Apr 21, 2003, 07:40 PM Hey m_allen1, I got the exact same problem. I got a v4 ps2 and after I installed a magic 3.1, it stopped reading dvds. I tried many differenet working lasers in it ,and it still woulndt read any type of dvds. I took out the modchip and its still doesnt work. I do not know what's wrong, but i know for sure the laser is not the problem. Please someone help.
MugsyGoten Apr 22, 2003, 01:05 PM believe it or not, I have the same exact problem. My only guess can be to adjust the DVD Pot, but I dont know how to do that. I can read any CD-R no problem, but any DVD I cannot read at all. BTW, I have a Messah 1 chip. Someone who knows what theyre talking about please help out here, Im desperate.
martin_3_8 Apr 22, 2003, 04:08 PM Adjusting the dvd pot won't do anything. It has nothing do with the laser because i tried like 5 different perfectly fine lasers in it, and the ps2 still wouldnt read dvds.
MugsyGoten Apr 23, 2003, 08:16 AM then whats the deal?
lhys09915 Apr 23, 2003, 10:30 AM it could be that the dvd controller chip is faulty even when not loading with new laser and taking the chip out.i think there is a fuse thats for the controler chip that may have blown.
martin_3_8 Apr 23, 2003, 04:55 PM Where is the dvd controller chip located on the motherboard?
MugsyGoten Apr 23, 2003, 06:19 PM and more importantly, how can I fix it?
lhys09915 Apr 23, 2003, 07:33 PM i dont think the controler chip can be fixed.it depends what version ps2 you have as to were the chip will be.
martin_3_8 Apr 23, 2003, 09:23 PM I got a v4 ps2.
MugsyGoten Apr 23, 2003, 10:45 PM same here

everything can be fixed if its meachanical else you wouldnt be able to make it in the first place.
unfortunalty im in the same situation (v4) ps2. havent tried cleaning or re-aligning yet tho so im just praying it works when i try it tonight
MugsyGoten Apr 24, 2003, 01:10 PM let me know whats goin on with that, I mean I just got 3 sweet games, and i sadly have no way to play them until I can fix my DVD reading issue. I find it wierd that the 3 of us all have the same problem with modded V4 consoles...
Bond Apr 27, 2003, 04:06 PM right, ive just cleaned my laser and ive adjusted the white gear to try and boot dvd games but nothing works? does anyone have any idea? if its the laser that needs replacing:
does it involve soldering?
if so does anyone know anywhere in the uk where i can get it replaced.
dont fancy touching a soldering iron to much
cheers
Bond Apr 29, 2003, 09:05 AM anyone?

The only thing about it is that the cost of repairing you wold have to rip into the board and redo stuff. It would be cheaper to probably by a ps2 and 2 games than to do this though

IF you can find a used ps2 that has a good laser an a botched soldering job you might be able to get it a little cheeaper and for those its just a transplant (Take of the cd cover and undo the ribbon and slide the unit of the rails and reinstallin the new one)
If you buy a new replacement laser they have to points that you have to remove the solder from you can use a 15 watt iron and desoldering braid for this
Optic_surfa Jun 15, 2003, 03:35 AM sigh... unfortunately, I now have the same problem as you guys
littlepr Jun 15, 2003, 12:25 PM It's the laser people! I Have replaced version4 for lasers because people could no longer play DVDs althought they weres till able to paly cds.
darkhybrid Jun 15, 2003, 01:39 PM yes, I think it is the laser. My cousin let me fix his PS2 b/c it ALSO couldn't read DVD's. I realigned and cleaned the lasers and for the past week and a half...nothings wrong with it now. But maybe the longevity of the PS2 could play a factor in with it as well. If you use your PS2 for everything such as playing PSone games, PS2 and DVD's on it..I'm sure that after years of that will die out the laser and will need a replacement.

well first sign of laser dieing is it not reading dvds , and which way did u movie the cog ? i know people who for the hell of it hav moved it so it makes the laser go dwn and its worked , some times u can get to close for comfort
Also my mate just to experiment turnedhis ps2 upside dwn and it worked ? i know this isnt ideal but it was just to see if it was the laser
handyguy Jun 16, 2003, 11:12 AM I think Sony put out a batch of them that do this & people called Sony & got another machine free.
Optic_surfa Jun 17, 2003, 05:49 AM really?
hmmm but my machine is modded, i cant send it back.. i rather keep my v4.. then get a newer version and have to get a new modchip....
felix17 Jul 03, 2003, 12:27 PM Same issue here. Cannot read any dvds - backups or originals but cds are perfect. So do we replace the laser or can we realign it?

Replacing your laser should solve the problem.
felix17 Jul 03, 2003, 12:47 PM thanks pepsik will start looking around
rome1234 Jul 03, 2003, 04:50 PM does anyone know of a trust worthy place to purchase v5 ps2 lasers for cheap?
