hi all,
i,ve got a panasonic dvd writer and a philips standalone.
the prob i,ve got is i have several "back ups" that work fine in my standalone but the dvd writer won,t even recognize them.
and i have a couple of other discs that work fine in the pc but my standalone just spits em out. the discs are datawrite greys and yellows.

the datawrite greytops i burn myself at 2x work fine in my standalone and the rewriter has no prob with them.

so hopefully someone could explain why.
cheers
roy

There can be a number of reasons for the problems you describe and it's not easy to find out sometimes. It's often a process of elimination to detect the reason.

Budget media is often the problem, followed by compatibility issues with standalone players. The burning method can also be a factor.

If your home burnt datasafe greys work ok in your standalone, you would imagine that all datasafe greys would be ok, but it's possible they have been burn incorrectly (by a 3rd party) i.e. wrong format or too fast. Also it's possible to get to batches of disks, with differing dye type, which can also have a bearing. Sometimes a standalone looks for an empty AUDIO_TS folder and not all back-up suppliers include them.

In addition to this DVD-Rom & Burner drives can be "picky" about certain media too.
So you can see that the combinations are endless.

If you have 3rd party disks that wont play on your standalone, it's highly likely that if you reburn them on your PC, they will work fine, assuming you can read them in.

Most problems though, are down to cheap/budget price media.
