A very common reason for this is problems with the audio extraction. Do you copy on the fly (directly from Cdrom to burner) or do you make a image file or rip the tracks onto your HD?
Often burners are much better than cd-roms to read audio discs. Try to rip all tracks to your HD first, then burn them to cd. If you are doing that already, please tell us. :)
These cracks could also come from your screen saver kicking in, or something producing heavy load, but then you will only get one crackle/dropout, on the time when this occours.
In your copy program, is jitter correction enabled? If not, enable it and see if this helps. This will slow down the extraction a bit, but will give less chance for errors.

I had all sorts of noise problems on my burned cds until I went with music CD blanks. They sound so much better and are more reliable. The're worth the extra money.

They are not worth the extra money. The only reason they cost more, is that there is a fee on them, like it is on cassette tapes. This said, these discs are made for audio only, and therefore are made to play well on audio cd players.
But a lot of regular data discs plays very well on home cd players. Unfortunately, what works in one player may not work in another. The only way is trial and error.

I have had good results with Verbatim, Kodak, Smart Buy (Made by Prodisc), Sony and all discs made by Ritek. Those from Ritek are badged with all kinds of brands, MMore, Traxdata are the most common ones. (At least here)
