There are three drives put into the XBOX at random 1. Philips 2. Thomson 3. Samsung. The only thing you need to know about the newest version (V1.2) is that the D0 solder point has moved a little bit. Also I'm not sure if they are still manufacturing Samsungs or not. The Samsung is generally considered the best drive for reading cheap media but as mentioned above the drives are put in at random. I do know that the Samsung is the rarest of all 3 of the drives. As for the cheap mod, well the verdict on them tends to be about 50/50 (some claiming they are great and others claiming that they are utter crap). The most highly recommended modchips out there are the Xecutor2 Lite or Pro. If you are experienced with installing modchips in PS2s then the cheap mod shouldn't be a problem for you to install but the Xecutor2s have fewer wires to solder and only one point is somewhat tricky (the D0 as mentioned above). I hope this helps
