i want to upgrade windows 98 to windows 98 se, when i try it, it says there is an operating system already installed,how would i able to do it..

how are you trying to upgrade?

You need Windows Update, Windows 98 Service Pack 1.

Use 98SE bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com Boot your PC using this bootable floppy.

Now to upgrade 98 with 98SE was to simply go to your Windows Folder (CD C:\WINDOWS) and rename win.com file (REN WIN.COM WIN.OLD). Then, install Windows 98SE in the same directory that 98 is installed. Since win.com is gone, it won't complain about being an upgrade and it will still use the existing registry and program files so you won't have to re-install a thing. I must warn you, this generally worked 9 times out of 10, but there was a rare few times when I ended up with a corrupt install so use this trick at your own risk.

When installation prompts you where to install the system files, pay attention to edit the destination directory, in order to use exactly the same where windows was (example: if the installation propose C:\windows.000, you just delete the last digits, and make the destination directory become C:\windows).

Sounds to me like you're trying to upgrade with a full install. Probably an oem version came with your computer. If you format your drive, then run the cd, it should take no problem.

First decide what you exactly want to do. An upgrade or a clean install. :rolleyes:

Madkid, just try my earlier solution of renaming the file. If that fails you can always revert back to WIN.COM
