Hi guys I posted a question in the vcd forum about divx dvd players, and one of the mods suggested it'd be cheaper to get a modded xbox.
What i'd like to now is how advanced is the xbox media player? Is it possible to playback divx 3.xx, 4.xx and 5.xx- do additional codecs need to be installed and if so how would i go about doing that? and do the cdr's needed to be encoded in a special format for the xbox to read it.
Also I found that many of my divx movies have 1 or 2 bad frames in them causing the picture to freeze but the audio to carry on- i get round this by using the ffdshow program, but i guess i wouldn't be able to install that on an xbox or could i?
Thanks for the help guys!!

you need the media player for the xbox pretty cool and also you can put multiple divx on 1 dvdr since they are compressed

Whew, lots to cover here.
I am not 100% sure what codecs are installed, but my guess is that they are the latest codecs at the time of the player build. You can find out for sure by going to www.xboxmediaplayer.de
You cannot add codecs as of yet, probably never, because you'd have to run the codec sourcecode through some XDK. If you are not a licensed developer, official XDKs are illegal.
CDR - This really depends on your Xbox DVDROM drive. If you have a Thomson, forget about it. If you have a Philips, yes, but you have to burn the discs in a special format. And if you have a Samsung, any CDR will play. I really like to burn DivX files to a single DVDR, then all movies can be played.
They do not to be encoded in any special way, unless you have a Philips drive. I have Samsung drives and all I do is just burn using any burning app.

All would become aparent if you got a modded Xbox, however yes there is a way to burn it to CD and copy it onto the Xbox over the top, kinda like an upgrade. However one of the most used capablities of the Xbox is it's ethernet port. Through it you can connect using FTP from your PC to the box and transfer files back and forth. You can also stream media from your PC into the Media Player, negating the need for CD copys.
