Ok, I'm thinking 'bout getting a the pioneer 105/ao5 burner and I had a couple of questions about. First off, it reads DVD's and burns CD'r, and since I don't feel like running an ide card for a third optical drive, should I get rid of my DVD-rom drive or my CD burner? Second, exactly how long does it take to burn a full disc at 4x? Third, are there any compatibilty issues between older dvd drives reading the burnt discs? Forth, most stand alone DVD players can read the DVD-R format, correct? And finally, what software do you guys recommend for DVD burning. I'm not really interested in game back-up, but do burn a lot of movies and need data back-up. I have to back up about 15 gigs of info, and 30 cdr's isn't going to cut it ......... ......................any help and opinions are appreciated, thanks

1 - I think only you can make that decision but I would dump the DVD-Rom because the 105 only burns CD-R at 16X.

2 - About 15 mins

3 - I've never heard of any.

4 - Yes, about 10% may have problems but using different media can sometimes sort this out.

5 - I use Nero and it works just fine for me.

If your plextor only burns at 16x then I would get rid of the CD-RW. How fast does your DVD-ROM drive read?

never had any problems out of mine, just make sure you set it to master.

DVd reads at 12x, and why set it to master? Is there actually a "safer" burn at master. I have my CD burner at master, but never tried it as slave.

I had a few errors sometimes at slave, the book says set it to master, I did so and put it at the topmost IDE cable and as master, No problems. I also left my Samsung 308b combo drive as master and set it on the 2nd IDE cable and they both work no problems.

nightheat,
i`ve just overcome the same problem, i`ve put my 16x plexwriter in a usb 2 external drive bay, it works a treat, leaving my a04 and dvd reader on same ide.

I don't currently have an external enclosure, and to buy one seems to start at 50 dollars. Still might do it though, but I do have a question. Where do the USB drivers come from for these? Are they automatically loaded with XP?

my box has the ide socket, seperate psu and a usb cable, plug it in and xp recognises it straight away as a seperate drive letter. either with a r/w or hdd in the bay.
the best part is its portable and hot connectable, plus taking a bit of heat away from the system.
i do on-the-fly back ups of cd`s from my dvd reader, no problem, saveing wear on a04. imho well worth it.
