i want to have all my karaoke cd's stored on the hdd of a laptop (or desktop pc) in mp3 format.

if i get a tv out card, is there a programme that will let me see just the karaoke screen part on a tv, whilst the control side of the programme is seen only on the pc screen?

As far as I know it is only the video card that you need to address. There are many cards that will allow 2 displays so that you can use something like winamp with it's plug in and have the words on one screen (say your telly) and the track list on another.
Winamp and plug in of course are free but you can also get the MTU Karaoke program which will serve to 2 screens.

What you need to use is a Trust Televiewer gizmo. They cost about £50 to £60 depending on which one you get.
Top left quarter of your laptop screen is zoomed into with the televiewer so that is all the punters see on the television or projector.
Under that you can have one window open into a music directory and the right hand side of the screen is the karaoke file window.
You can alt tab between windows whilst cueing the tracks to be played without anybody seeing what's going on.
The top left bit of the screen can have a animated gif running displaying your name or logo and when you call up winamp to play the karaoke track it will just appear instead of the logo.
If you tag the graphic part of the mp3g file as hidden then this makes it easier to navigate the tracks.

I use the Nvidia Geeforce 4 MX 440 graphics card ,The software drivers supplied with it allows screen spanning ro cloning , which allows you to have a normal PC SCREEN on your Monitor, and allows just the Karaoke screen on the other spanned screen, or TV OUTPUT.
Like that the Punters only see the screen you want them to see.
It is personal preference how you set things up, i have been using the above system for gigging now for about 15 mths, and it works very well for me.

As far as i know u can only CLONE (duplicate) your desktop to a tv from a laptop.
Due to laptop displays being digital + tvs being analog u can't EXTEND your desktop onto the tv which i believe is what gooty wants to do.
if anyone knows different PLEASE let me know as i've a lovely 12" digital monitor i've been trying to get to work for about a month now lol

daplaya knows a lot more about this than me so maybe he may pass on some information

for gooty + anyone else who may not know, if u have a video card with tv out, particularly the gf4 as ceejay said, most allow u to EXTEND your desktop to a secondary monitor or tv which gives you a blank screen on said secondary device, if u have winamp with the cdg plugin goto preferences then cdg settings + u can select to display the graphics on your secondary display

if anyone would like any inf on the system i use which cost around £350 (INF ONLY, I DON'T SELL) feel free to e-mail me stevebicks@yahoo.com

hope this helps,

steve

Any laptop with a D connector for an external monitor can be used with the Televiewer.
