MR2-UK May 17, 2003, 04:48 PM Hi,
First off i have to say that I think I know what the answer to this question will be but here goes anyway.
The PC I use at work is running Win 2000 and was setup by our IT Dept so they are the administrators. They have locked me out of loads of things even simple stuff like changing the desktop background, defraging and updating Media Player.
If I go into the security settings of the C drive it shows everyone has full control of that drive.
Is there any way I get a bit more control of the system ?
Thanks.
heavyartilery540 May 17, 2003, 04:51 PM go to the IT Depo and ask them, or u could hack
duffy90210 May 17, 2003, 05:19 PM They did that for a simple reasons, to cut down on maintainence due to users installing bad or virus infected software, also its part of their job because their boss asked them to, after all, a work computer at work is just what it should be for most companies, sound very cold, but this is just fact of life.
And I would not recommend hacking as suggested, it could get you fired, so take his other advice, and ask your IT guys about it instead.

Smiffy280361 May 17, 2003, 05:22 PM Like it's said m8,although you may be a user with more knowledge/experience with pc's it easier for the admin guys to restrict everyones access to the same level. If you really need to change the default settings and have a valid reason ASK....

uk_trader May 17, 2003, 08:24 PM Try making a shortcut on your desktop to the windows dir this should give you more ability depends how theyve restricted your access though.
MR2-UK May 18, 2003, 07:24 AM Thanks for the replies folks.
I suppose you're right its for work and not play. A funny thing is that they even tried to hide media player so we couldn't use it. I think they were a bit p###ed because I formated it and installed XP, they wouldn't have found out if it wasn't for the motherboard going down just after I did it. What bad timing :)
Thanks again.
nightheart May 18, 2003, 07:30 AM I'll tell you this from experiance. Where I'm working now, there is unrestricted access to PC's. The IT dept., in its infinate wisdom, spends day and night fixing viruses, removing spyware, trying to keep win95 (yes 95) running, and running around like idiots. Course the place is owned by a cheap, well u know
Rule of thumb, its bad enough when idiots muck up their own system, but when they hose a work system, that costs a lot more money..............just my 2 cents.............
Richskie May 18, 2003, 07:37 PM I'm not particually surprised by their reaction to you installing an OS they hadn't got a licence for. I don't think you will have much luck getting them to relax the restrictions.
