well i think if u r gona get your self a brand new xbox i think they will be the v1.2 witch is almost the same but the d0 point is move but no biggi, because thers allready some tutorials on how to chip it with (my opinion) the best chip out their the X2Lite, the only thing that u should look for in a xbox is the dvd drive, because some play all the media an some are crap an dosent play the cheap kind like the silverback 1.
hope i help u a bit

versions available are 1.0 1.1 & 1.2
doesnt really matter which (unlike the ps2 did).
I just bought one from woolworths for £129 with free motogp game. Toysrus also have a game free (choice from 2).
Look at the back of the box & you'll see a hole where u can find a sticker on the back of the Xbox that has the manufacture date.
If u get one with manufacture date after Nov 2002 you'll more likely have the samsung dvd drive in it that should be able to play cdr (normal dvd drive only plays dvd, dvdr & cdrw).
mine turned out to be manufactured jan 2003 & was a version 1.1
install of Xecuter2 lite was very easy, but yet to see if it works as i dont yet have a working backup
hope this helps.

Just want to add that the date thing isn't a water-tight way of telling what drive you will get.
But the exception to the rule is the new limited edition XBox's which are V2.0 and have Phillips drives.

You sure that they only carry Philips drives and they aren't put in at random just like the regular XBOXs? It seems odd to me that they would just start exclusively putting Philips drives in thier limited edition XBOXs, unless they got some sort of a sweet package deal from Philips if they let them manufacter all of the drives for the limited edition XBOXs.

I just got my XBOX last month and it was a v1.1, and a couple of other friends who just got theirs as well also got v1.1 all from various stores. I got mine from costco, they got theirs from Fry's Electronics and Best Buy.
All in all they can all be chipped but I heard the v1.2 is not as compatible with some modchips as the 1.0 and 1.1

The deal is that the D0 point has been moved somewhat which can be a real pain if you are planning on using a no solder mod/pogo-pin adapter. If you are using a solder modchip however then it is simply a matter of locating the new location of the D0 point. XBOX-SCENE now has a tutorial for the V1.2 XBOXs and it shows where the D0 point is located in the V1.2s.
