The initial reports on the NEC 1300 (dual format drive) are pretty good so I would say that it would be a good choice. Not unless you can find a new Cendyne/Verbatim dual format drive for a good price.

The +R only one is supposed to be the same internally as the dual format version. Don't think anyone has managed to flash their +R to +R/-R yet though.

The 1100 and 1300 are "electronically identical" No doubt just matter of time before someone comes up with the unofficial firmware to make an 1100 into a 1300.

From what I have seen so far there are massive complaints from 1300 users that the drive only works with expensive high end media. It will not work with cheaper media. Presumably NEC will take note and put out new firmware soon??

I dont think that is correct I ahve read many times before things like this and the chips and layout on board are different
