I have a chipped V.5 PS2 with a magic 3. I bought it used (it was the floor display at my old video game store) 4 months ago and chipped it then. Last night, I was happily playing backups but today, my PS2 cannot read a thing. I have tried DVD's, Ps2 & PS1 originals and backups but it will not read any of them. I tried cleaning the laser lens with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol but now I just hear my PS2 working harder trying to recognize the disc. I don't want to buy a new laser but i dont think i have any other choice. Does anybody have any other remedies or advice from experience or anything? Thanks in advance..

Is the disc actually spinning mate?

Had a similair problem on a Ps2 with a Magic3 and it turned out to be the fuse that supplies the power for the laser/motor.

Hey, I have interesting info to report.. I took off my PS2 case and watched how the disc spins inside the CD-case (If I took the CD-case off, it can't run a disc of course).

For PS2 originals, it spins at normal speed forever but never really reads anything.

For PS2 backups, it spins VERY VERY FAST, like it's going into hyper drive and doesn't do anything else.

For PS1 originals AND backups, the PS2 does 2 quarter spins (what the PS2 does when there is no disc in tray) and doesn't spin after that, so basically, it doesnt even recognize my PS1 discs!

So, PS2 games spin but the PS2 cannot read them and it definately doesnt spin for my PS1 games so what does this all mean? I opened the CD cover case and watched the laser as i reseted and it moves up and down and blinks bright red (as normal I suppose) so I dont think the laser is dead, either? Anybody know what's up? Thnx.

I think your laser is shot mate. Maybe get a new one. :)

Either that or check the chip and make sure everything is connected properly. It could also be a fuse too...

 Yikes, I was afraid it was the laser! But before I go out and buy a new laser and so on.. Let me check...

How do I check my chip and it's connections? Look for broken or loose connections? Sorry, dont know much about soldering..

As for the fuse? How would I go about checking that? The fuse gives power to it and the laser blinks red and moves up and down when I start up and all so I dunno?

Also, as for the laser, if I buy a new one, can I buy one that is new, imporved and will not die out like the craptacular one the V.5 comes with or do I have to buy a specific V.5 laser?

Thanks for the help...

Yead, just open up the psx2 Gently and check all the wire connections to see if loose or broken off. Also check the solder points and make sure the wires are on the correct points.

Isn't there something--some kind of tool--that can check to see if the fuse works? Well, you could try to get a new fuse. It's cheaper than buying a new laser. If it's the fuse, you won't have to buy the laser.

Buy a NEW one online. I forget the websites. I think you have to buy the laser that is compatible with you version psx2.

Hope this helps... :)

Hey, I got a hold (for free) of a Version 4 laser and was wondering if anybody can CONFIRM that I can swap a version 4 laser in my version 5? It can save me money if I can.. If not I'll have to buy a v5...

UPDATE:
Whoops, just read a post saying only a version 4R (SPCH 30001-R) will fit. Has anybody done this successfully?
