I am using XP but have not added ASPI layers (e.g. ForceASPI). My burning programs seem to work fine (Nero, WinonCD, Alcohol120, CloneCD, EZCD) but I've seen many posts advising to add an ASPI layer. Does an ASPI layer help with copy protected game backups or anything else?

Nope. You only need it if the software that you are using requires it.
