I am wanting to stick a higher processor in my MoBo and upgrade the RAM a little, but I am not sure how I can take it, This is what it says from the Motherboard Manual

This mainboard has a Socket-462 processor socket for AMD K7 type CPU's. You can install any one of these processor front-side bus speeds of 200/266 MHz.

This mainboard uses T-Bird chipset which integrates a 128 bit AGP Graphics Accelerater and provides a optional 4X AGP slot for highly graphical display. CPU Plug and Play through firmware, Ultra DMA 33/66/100 function. The mainboard has a built in AC'97 4Ch Codec, provides an AMR (Audio Modem Riser) slot to support Audio And Modem application, and has a built in 10BaseT/100Base TX Network InterfacE. iN ADDITION THE MAINBOARD HAS AN EXTENDED SET OF atx I/0 Ports including PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports, two USB ports, an RJ-45 LAN port, a parallel port, one serial port, and one VGA port. Two extra USB ports can be added using Extened USB Module that connects to the mainboard.

This mainboard has all the features you need to develope a powerful multimedia workstation that is network ready. The board is Micro ATX size and has a power connector for an ATX power supply.

Ok now I am unsure of what all that means I don't know how high a processor I can go, I will go the highest that it will take, maybe someone here can tell me what that means.

Cheers

You only need the make and model number of the mainboard, then check the manufactures website, normally the manual isalways dated as new CPUs are out every few months, but with a newer BIOS update, they can take faster CPUs.

Ok on the front page of the Motherboard it says

pc266 SYSTEM BOARD
M810 Series
Socket A

If that helps, I was thinking maybee buy a new motherboard and processor that can take DDR and has a faster Bus speed, but I seen a processor for 40 £40 says its 266 FSB and is 2400 Mhz I just dont know if the board will take it.

Most likely to be a PC-Chips M810LMR model, there are two type, the standard one that take only SDRAM and a 'D' model that can take both DDR and SDRAM.

I am not sure if it can go as high as 2400Mhz, but if you look on the board itself, you should see a revision number, with this info, head towards www.pcchips.com and look for the latest BIOS, with it, you should be able to work out how far it can go.

I really wanted to save the cash and just go for a higher end processor but from what I've been told, its not going to boost performance because it will not work well with SDRAM. So for the little bit extra I can buy a Motherboard with a 2600 processor and add some DDR RAM to that. Save the trouble, I don't want to be buying a processor then finding out its not going to work or system performance has not improved.

Thanks anyway:tup:

Well I am not sure what model the board is apart from the following info

M810LR K7 SOCKET 462 SUPPORTS ATHLON/DURON
SUPPORTS 1 GIG SDRAM PC100/133
1 4X AGP SLOT
2 PCI SLOTS

Ive been thinking about it and decided rather then having to buy a new MoBo and new ram and processor it would be much more cost effective to just upgrade the processor and take the RAM up to 1 Gig. I am hoping that I can get at least a 2 gig processor in it to give me a performance boost in running games. So what do you think? will it take 2 gig or maybee more?
