Redneck Texan Jun 03, 2003, 11:20 PM More than Half the movies I watch crash my computer. Its a Sony DVD-ROM, Asus Mobo, ATI Radeon 8500LE, 256 MD Corsair DDR, Athlon XP 2100.
Ive tried PowerDVD, ATI Software, Interactual, they all crash about 5 minutes into movies. I now have a Stand alone DVD Player designed for a TV. But I cant stand to watch a Movie on a TV, after getting used to the superior picture quality ( Black is really Black ) via computer monitor.
Are any of you aware of a way to output DVD player to a vidoe card or directly to RGB Monitor?
My ATI card has SVGA output but no input slot.
Or can you recomend a DVD-ROM that never has reading errors.
PhilEnfield Jun 04, 2003, 02:54 PM Are these original DVD's or DVDR's we're talking about ?
Redneck Texan Jun 04, 2003, 08:35 PM New Factory Movies on DVD.
fawlty Jun 04, 2003, 09:48 PM I think you should go back to finding why the PC crashes. Is it only with DVD movies? When do you mean when you say "crash"?
Redneck Texan Jun 04, 2003, 11:01 PM My Current Computer Configuration ( Asus, ATI,) has been up several months now, and is extremely stable otherwise, it almost never crashes in any other Application or Game. My DVD-Rom is a Sony DDU-1621. It was also connected to my previous sytem ( Gigabyte, Geforce256 ) and I had the same problem watching DVD Movies. When I say it "crashes" what I am refering to is that, when you start a movie it usually, but not always makes it to root menu screen, but after you start movie, about 5 minutes into it, about 75% of the time, The screen will freeze, and the Hard drive can be heard working hard, on a rare occasion system will pause for about 30 seconds, then recover to play rest of movie with no problems. however it usually freezes screen for about 30 seconds, then gives me blue screen stating error reading drive, and spits out DVD. And then you have to do a dirty reboot to get back to OS. Whats strange is I usually end up watching every movie I rent, It just takes several reboots, then for some reason it will deal with problem and work fine. This is the only DVD-Rom Ive ever had. And I dont have a clue how to flash its bios. I would be happy to buy a new DVD-Rom ( thinking about a Plextor Combo ) If I knew it would fix the situation.
PS That ATI card has a decoder in it. ATIs software uses it. the other software ive tried uses software decoding. I Think.
PhilEnfield Jun 05, 2003, 03:44 AM Certainly sounds like a hardware issue to me.
My bet would be, if you get a new DVD-ROM drive, you will lose the problem. They are dirt cheap now if u shop around. It's not worth all the hassell.
aaronjon Jun 05, 2003, 08:03 AM toshiba, lite-on, pioneer, dvdroms all spring to my mind before a plextor for capability and cost.
Templar Jun 05, 2003, 02:36 PM Agreed. My $40.00 lite-on has been flawless, and fast for over a year, and believe me, thats a whole lotta playin & rippin..........
