i am thinking of getting a special xbox without the dvd drive for pretty cheap. i have a pc dvd drive that i never use that came with my pc, it has just been laying in my system since i got my cd burner, i even ripped it out of my system and it is just laying on my desk so i could give the full ide channel to the cd burner. so can i just put it in the xbox? or will i need an original xbox dvd drive? if i can put it in the xbox, would i just need to plug it in with the original plugins or what will i need to do to install it?
also, can i put it in the place of the xbox drive (you know, inside the xbox to the left).
if anyone knows anything special that I will need to do, then please LMK.
BTW I know that I won't be able to read originals, but i use cdrs more than originals and this will save me over $50.
Thanks

I believe that the plug-ins are slightly different. I assume you have already searched around at www.xbox-scene.com as they will be the best place to find out about this kind of stuff. The one thing to consider is that you won't be able to back up your XBOX original discs without the XBOX DVD Drive. Yes you could be able to PLAY your own backups WITHOUT the XBOX ORIGINAL DVD Drive. I hope this helps.

yap, the pc dvd rom drive cannot read original disc. That's mean you cannot play original games and cannot back them up either.

OK, that says that i cannot replace the drive and i need both drives to work, I am wanting to replace the drive completely, how do i do this?
jesterrace777, I thought about backing up my games, but i download all the cdr releases i have and buy the dvdr releases. So, I don't think I'll miss that, especially since I don't plan on upgrading the HDD.

Well if that's the case then I would go ahead and go that route OR what you could do is buy an XBOX with a working DVD Drive and pull out the drive and sell it on ebay. Even a Philips or Thomson will go for $50-$60.
