I am stumped.

I have discovered that IE6 will not download or play animated gif files.
I get an image, but the file will not play, and it is not downloaded to the Temp Internet Files folder. Also, if I try to save the image, it will only save as a .bmp.

If I open the same page using a browser called Fast Browser, it works just fine, and the gif is downloaded to the temp internet folder. Then when I open the page in IE6 the gif plays, because it is then reading the file from the Temp Internet folder.

I have uninstalled IE6 and re-installed. I have gone through all the settings I can think of in the Tools/Internet Options/Advanced. All the graphics and multimedia options are enabled. I have even gone through the security settings one by one with no change.

What am I missing?

:furious:

Have you tried clearing out your temp internet files and then trying it?

Yep.

And I have removed all the offline content. And the stuff from Downloaded Program Files folder.

Weirdly, I remember this happening some time ago to someone on this board when XP was still fresh. We never found a solution and in the end a reinstall of XP fixed it for him.

Actually, I just searched the forum and there is a more recent case of the same problem - also unsolved! Possibly one of lifes little XP mysteries ...

Thanks for the info. I'll keep trying to find a solution short of windows re-install.

My setup wasn't always this way. It is just in the last month or so (now that I think back) Possibly some other program that I have installed is in some way affecting it.
