I am with NTL Currently 600k I want to upgrade to 1Mbit connection for £34.99/month. Is it much faster then 600k, I get about 60-70k download speeds on my current 600k connection what download speeds will I get on 1Mbit, and I always get the answer "it depends where u download from" well I know that but what will the avarage be?

You have answered your own question by saying you know about 'depend on where you download from', the guys here does not know where you normally download from, so you will have to download from various sites where you normally do, then devide it, and you will get the 'average'.

Well NTL say 600 k is 10x faster then 56k and 1mbit is 20x faster this makes i1mbit 10 faster then 600k right? So if I was to multiple 60kb/sec by 10 that would give me about 600k/sec.. To be honest with you I don't thik any connection in the UK can pull that off and even if I did sign up to 1mbit not many HTTP servers have that amouunt of bandwith, am I right?

Again, depend on where you download from, like when I use a 2Mbps line to download Linux ISOs, on many servers, they do come down at full 2Mbps, but many will either limit the bandwidth so everyone will get a fair share, and some simply just do not have the bandwidth to match what you have.

And the idea of a faster line is not always designed just for one single download site, meaning if you can use half of it on one site, you would still have 'spare' bandwidth to download from another site at the same speed.

Like in Japan, who now starting to use 13Mbps lines, you really think that the hosting server will have a 130000Mpbs pipe just incase 10'000 people decided all to download a large file at the same time ? Its all down to the same point, you are just given a wider road to drive on, provide the road is clear, and no other users sharing, then you have a clearer run. more drivers sharing the same road, you all just have to slow down as the road is only this big.

Cheers Duffy I see what you mean, I will never max out 1mbps because not many servers have that sort of Bandwith but like you said it gives you a larger road to drive on. Kind of like buying a fast computer you could gain 180 FPS in a high detailed game which gives you more room to fit more detail in without slowing it down. So really the upgrade is not worth it then.

Hi Lee

Your maths are slightly out, 1mb is just under twice as fast as 600kb, not 10 x faster.

I often reach around 130kb/s but as duffy said it all depends on the sever.

Hi,

That dosen't seem much of a difference to me, I think i'll stick to 600k, :).
