Okay im sorry for the dumb question but in Nero the highest burn speed for my ao5 is 2x. I updated my firmware to 1.33. Any help?

What media are you using? Are you sure that it is 4x Certified?

I have memorex 4x but nero doesnt even give me the choice of 4x only 1x,2.

Try Record Now Max and see what happens. Also, is Nero up to date?

I had the same problem with nero (however, ever since I switched over to a RecordNOW/Alcohol 120 combo, all problems solved).

Okay I used the Nero that came with the drive and now I have 1x, 1.5x and 2 but not 4x.

Go to the above and download the latest Nero. This should cure your problem.

Well now my dvd copy option has a maximum setting but all other dvd settings are still set to 2x. Okay so should I just live with it?

No. If the media is really 4X you should have that option. Give Record Now Max a try, just for sport. It's a better program anyway.

I tried to install record max now and as soon as I rebooted I got a config.sys stacks error. after hours of fooling with my computer and calling everybody I know I had to reformat. DAMN! I lost tons of stuff DAMN! But now my drive writes at 4x. Scared to install record max now

That's terrible. Haven't heard of anybody having any trouble even close to that before using RNM. Glad you got the 4X problem over with though. You might want to consider Drive Image from powerquest, or Norton ghost, to back up your drive once you get it all back the way you like it. I image my drive every week for just that reason. I experiment with my PC way too much not to have a good backup.

I didn't have any problem installing and upgrading RNM. I'd say try again after your reformat and fresh install. If it screws you up again you don't have much to lose - well other than reformat again ...
