Well if I were you I would definitely upgrade to Windows 2k or XP as with Windows '98 you are stuck with the FAT 32 system (4GB limit). With one of the two OS listed above you can convert to NTFS which removes this limit. about 98% of all movies out there are over 4GB so you would have to do some SERIOUS ripping and compressing in order to get them to fit with a FAT 32 system. Also 13GB of HD space is insufficient as you will need over 4GB of space for each project. Anyways you are also going to need to pick up some additional software programs: DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink or DVD2ONE and Recordnow Max or Nero.

Depending where you get the 105 from it may come with no software. If you want software, then you probably should get an A05.

The biggest thing you can afford. I'm a little new to this game, but here's how I see if. You going to need at least 4-5 gigs of space for each movie ripped to the hard drive, and unless you delete every movie right away, space is going to fill up fast. I'd get at least a 40 gig hd, but try to opt for an 80 or more. Maxtor drives have always worked for me. And as stated you should undate your OS to at least 2000, but I'd go for XP............just my 2 cents.............

I agree with the statements above. You never can really have too much HD space. However if the only space consuming thing that you are doing is DVD writing then I would say you should be safe with a 40GB HD. Keep your eye out for weekly specials and you can get a VERY good deal on one of these.

If possible, get a 7200 RPM drive, with an 8 Mb buffer. I've seen Western Digital 120 Gb Drives with those specs for around $120 bucks after rebate at a number of local stores like CompUSA, and Best Buy in the last couple of Months. A good deal is a dollar a gig, or less.

Yeah and if you are watchful you can catch Staples, Officemax or Bestbuy in a Pricematch. I was able to get a 120GB Western Digital (7200 RPM and 8MB cache) from Bestbuy for $60 when Officemax had thier rebate deal on the same drive. The difference is that Officemax had that $60 pricetag after a couple of mail-in rebates but I got it for that price right at the counter from Best Buy. I made the grave mistake of selling the drive and have been kicking myself for it ever since.

Don't worry about what programs the drive comes with, what you need is on the net.

DVD2One, DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter

My 105 came with Sonic My DVD, USELESS

Totally agree here. Sonic MY DVD crashed my PC quite a few time, just loading it. Never cared though. when you can get the above programs for free (legally) off the net...............

Yeah, Windvd4 is the only program that came with my Cendyne (Relabeled 105) that I actually use. Sonic was completely worthless and so was Nero Express.

The A05 here comes with:

ULEAD DVD Workshop 1.3 SE
ULEAD VideoStudio 6 SE DVD
ULEAD PictureShow 1.0 SE
RecordNow DX DVD/CD Writing Software
DLA with StorageGuard
Simple Backup
Cyberlink PowerDVD XP V4.0
SONIC ReelDVD LE 3.0.3
SONIC DVDit! 2.5 PE
Pegasys TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 Light

I wouldn't call all of that useless.

I just picked up my A05 retail from bestbuy (usa), and I didn't get much of that. I got roxio (wow), sonic(keeps crashing pc), and pinnacle systems software (didn't try it). I'm pretty hooked on nero, and really can't stand much roxio/adaptec make. I'm also pretty impressed with the freeware mentioned above, I've been able to download. If it wasn't for the pretty good deal I got on this one, I'd have went oem myself.............just my 2 cents, but my software was useless................

@DvdrUK, I have never tried to hide what country (or city for that matter) I live in. Although I guess I don't actually have it as part of my username.

As with all PC hardware, the bundled software will vary depending on your region.

You don't have to convert to NTFS since all vob files are 1024MB in length, so the limit doesn't come into it

Although, if you don't mind then it is the best option for PS2 iso's etc
