i found this https://secure.pixelgate.net/allmedia/pioneer-drive.html but the first drive on the list says its a "bare" drive. does that mean it won't come with the cables, or it won't come with the software...or niether.

Its an internal drive and it wont come with any ide or power cables but you probably already have a spare ide and power connector in your case already.
If not they the cables are pretty cheap to obtain or you can put this drive in an external case also
The link stated that it came with software also

Yup that drive is the bare OEM 105. The same drive that comes loaded down with the software and hookups is the A05. I think that PS2daddy and Mr.Snatcher said everything else that needs to be covered. Moving to DVD Forum.

since when do they need a power cable? They don't....
you use your hd cable to connect them usually. so no cable needed. I bet they don't come with software, which sucks.

Well all drives need a power cable. However the other end is connected to the PSU so you can't really get a cable as such, you can however get a splitter.
