Hello, ive been having some huge problem with my cd-drive lately. It's completly dead, meaning i dont get no response from it, the drawer wont open up and the lil' light that used to light-up to indicate you that your cd-drive is active wont light-up...
looks like the entire cd-drive is dead, i cant even see the "cd-rw" icon under "my computer" icon and i have some games installed on my destop and whenever i double-clicked on one of them it says "cannot detect cd-drive"

seems like someone deleted my entire cd-drive, has anyone had these kind of problem? my floppy disk and local disk works fine but cd-drive is..i dont know...

anyway, i have a e-machine computer and im running windowXP.

do you guys think that ill have to get a new cd-drive?( eventhought id prefer not spend any money on computer toolz)
or is this problem repairable im hopefull it is. thank you.

You cannot really delete the drive, either the device has packed in altogether or the only other thing is the power lead has come loose on the rear of the drive, check the plug is secure or if you have a spare one try that in its place, if someone else has been using your system the only thing that can be done to permanently remove a drive is to go into CMOS and change the device setting to "none" take a look, if you have not been into CMOS before let us know and someone will give you instructions on how to check.

PS the device power connector is the small white one with 4 wires you cant fit incorrectly as the plug should be tapered along the one edge

OK thanks for the reply, i been posting over every computer forum online with no luck yet...
You said that the power lead might have come loose at the rear of my laptop..ive just check and seems like everything is straight
also, i dont know if this will be helpful to mention but my roomate had purchased and installed some program called softice into the pc and i think(i may be wrong) that the cd-drive been acting weird ever since, it started making a lot of noize, just like a broken car before dying and shutting down completly.

cougar-you mantion that the only thing that can be done for now is go into my cmos and change the device setting- i have no idea whats a cmos and ill appreciate someone to help me get there and see if the problem of my cd-drive reside there...thank you.

Restart your computer, and usually you will see at the bottom of the screen, press Del (usually). Press the appropriate key. If there is no info at the bottom of the screen, try either Del as above, or F8, or Ctrl. This will take u into the bios setup where u can access your cmos settings. Make sure the drive is listed or check connection as instructed above. If this fails, try another drive.

If it was making wierd noises my money would be on it having crapped out. If you dik around with the CMOS, dont forget if you get uncomfortable in there you can just hit escape and dont save anything

ok thanks a lot for the reply, i also think it might had been crapped out too and died forever. i think im the first with this kind of problem where the cd-drive just died on me with no reason. i went into the bios and try to get it to "default setting" but i guess this didnt work..so i think i might go to the store and get me a new cd-drive..or i may try to open-up my laptop and see if there arent anything disconnected in there.

ok, i find what was wrong with my cd-drive. after watching a re-run of mcgyver, i decided that i was going to get my too my tool box and open up my laptop to find out what was wrong with it. i made 2 amazing discovery, 1- it was real dirthy in there, a lot of dust, and 2 when i un-screwed the cd-drive that was inside my laptop, i discover that there was a medium size battery jammed inside it,. it was the reason why it was acting weird before it died...i quickly came to the conclusion that my lil' nephew inserted it in whyle i was not watching .
i thought that after i got the lil' battery out of the cd-drive and screwed everything back, everything will be alrightg and i was going to be able to used my cd-drive again, BUT i was wrong, it still remain dead. i figured out the damage was already done.. :(
