hi all,
this forum has been alot of help for me in the past

but i have a query which i can't find any threads on..
pls direct to me one if there is.
anyway, i own a box with a 120 GB drive and my games are saved on the f: drive. i am told on screen that there is only 104.311 Gb total HD space on this drive however, and also notice that a number of other drives exsist aswell.. can someone be kind enough to explain the deal with the hard drives to me :-)
is there any kind of way i can optimise my hard drive/s, to get max space? what about the other 15 od gig?

oh also, i have a box which doesn't recognise some cd-r , can someone pls explain the deal with xbox versions and the media that can be used?..

thanks .. i'm a bit of a newbie:tup:

Okay, here goes:

C: - The Xbox main system partition, as it is on your PC. Main files are stored here.
D: - Xbox DVD Drive.
E: - Save game and music partition.
F: - Created by user to give extra storage.
X: - Cache drive.
Y: - Cache drive.
Z: - Cache drive.

Basically every partition other than F is a set size, defined by Microsoft when the Xbox is in an original state. This is for continuity as games, and possibly the whole xbox, would not work if the drive sizes were different. Due to this, you can not add, nor take away space from any partition. So your F drive is whatever space is left, once the original partitions have been created.

As for the drives, there are three kinds of DVD drive. Thompson, Phillips and Samsung. The Thompson drive was the first drive to be used in the Xbox. It's basically crap! Will read DVD media and CD-RW's but not much else. The Phillips is slightly better in that some people have had success reading CD-R's. This drive again will read DVD's and CD-RW's. The Samsung is the best drive of them all. It will read just about anything you can throw at it.

The easiest way to tell what drive you have is to look at the following picture:

Hope that helps!
