Ive come across a couple of FTP sites that when you connect, either 1> disconnect automatically because im "anonymous", or 2> need a password. How do I go about connecting to these sites? thanks

That means you need a login name and password to go into those ftp sites.

Those are private ftp sites. They need to give you the login name and password and some of them use different port number to connect. So you have to get that info also.
