Try updating the mobo bios to the latest version and make sure there's adequate cooling to the cpu.

Is it an AMD 2.6GHz chip or is it an AMD XP 2600?

AMD doesn't make a 2.6 cpu. the 3200 xp (fatest right now, i think) is really a only a 2.2, and as the 2600xp is really a 2.08 ghz cpu, what your trying to do in effect is overclock it. Let it set at 2 ghz, or a little more, but DON't jump to 2.6 without knowing a little bit about o/clocking or your going to be in for a world of hurt............

i know what you mean about the speed, doest do
what is says on the tin.its an amd xp 2.6 ghz.think
at the boot up screen.were it shows the drives.it
will say what processor it is.when it shows that it
is a xp 2.6 ghz.then it acts up.when this shows lower
it seems to be ok.

As you've been told, your overclocking the processor! There is no 2.6GHz AMD chip, your confusing the model name with the clock speed. It is CALLED an AMD Athlon XP 2600, that does not mean it is 2.6GHz, the clock is much lower as nightheart has said. Continue to run it at that speed without knowing what your doing and you will have a cooked processor pretty quickly.

You don't know what it means. When the system boots it displays the name of the cpu, NOT the clock speed. the chip is called an amd 2600xp, which has a clock speed of 2.08. the 2600 means that it can compete on the same level as a P4 2.6 ghz, not that it is a 2.6 cpu. AMD cpu's have a lower ghz speed rating, yet can run head to head with a higher rated P4 cpu, that's where the name comes from. If you keep increasing the speed without overclocking it right, you'll fry the thing, and that is NOT covered under the amd warranty. a 2.08 to 2.6 overclock is something a vet. would have to do, and is not a good idea for a newbie to o/clocking!!! Most overclocks are only 100-200 mhz over, not 600, and before someone posts it, i've seen a 2 ghz celeron overclocked to 3.0 ghz, but that is rare.....

And likely cooled with an advanced water-cooling setup or even some form of liquid nitrogen or similar!

:D and with the money spent to cool something like that, it's cheaper to buy a 3ghz P4 chip, but I guess you'd lose bragging rights....
