I have just installed WS_FTP Pro. I don't know much about FTP but I installed it because I wanted to be able to transfer files between computers and I was pretty sure this could be done with this program. I've been trying to configure it with the IP adress of the other connected computer but I'm not sure I'm doing this right. Do I need some sort of web hosting to get this to work or can both computers connect with the right configuration?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

If the PCs are connected on a private network there is no need for an FTP programme, just enable shared drives in Network Neighbourhood then transfer the files with windows explorer

I have to agree with Darkman, no need for ftp if both puters are home networked, if its just the case of sharing a folder, just right click on the folder with the files in it, click on 'sharing and security' and tick the box that says 'share this folder on the network', a hand will appear under the folder to show it's shared.

Thank you both for your replies. But isn't there something about the speeds being better with the ftp file transfer? Well anyways, I'm goning to try your suggestions. But where can I find this network neighborhood I don't seem to have it installed on my computer, and how do I set it up? Do I have to do this proceedure on both computers?

Thanks again for any info...

I found something that might have to do with what you suggested, but I'm not sure, it's something that reads "publish this folder on the web" or something. It appears on the left side of the screen when I open a folder on my windows xp. But I think this is to upload my shared folders on the internet so that they can be downloaded from anywhere else, and not to transfer files directly from my pc to a remote pc as I was hoping.

For an FTP client to work on one you have to have an FTP server on the other, two clients cannot pass files between each other.
BulletproofFTP is a good server.
Are your two computers networked or both on separate internet connections?

thank you littleanimal. The computers have two different internet connections, in fact one is in one house and the other is in another house. I'll look for this bulletproofFTP software you mentioned, but I don't really know how to set up the client/server stuff, but i'll give it a try. Any other tips you can give me will be welcomed, I'm no expert.

thanks again..

To move files over the internet you will need to use FTP.
I did a quick search on google and found an FTP tutorial for you: http://www.atpm.com/network/files/ftp.htm

Thanks for the tutorial Darkman. I've already got the FTP client/server configured and working on both computers, I've been able to transfer and receive files with no problem. Although I must say that the speeds are not as impressive as I thought they would be. I think the speeds are very much like the ones I get when I transfer files to somewone else using microsoft messenger. Isn't there a way to speed up the FTP file transfer using the server/client? Thanks...

The speed is limited by the connection between the computers. Transferring via FTP won't really improve the speed.
