Hi guys,

I am thinking of spending some of my hard earned cash on an 80GB 7200 Hitachi Hard drive. I've never used these (only used Western Digital in the past), but the prices on the Hitachi's are really good. Do any of you guys have any recommendations on these drives?

TIA
Derrick

Well Hitachi took over IBM's HD division so it's an IBM really. ;)

These drives have proved to be big trouble in recent times sadly. (Run a search and you will read tales of woe.)

If I was you I'd pay slightly more for the security & peace of mind that knowing your info is safe will bring. i.e. buy a WD or a Maxtor.

That is true. I don't know if they give you any kind of special offers or mail-in rebates in South Africa but here in the US they have periodic specials on Western Digital and Maxtor drives.

Thanks for the advice/opinions guys...I'll give them a miss and stick to Western Digital, which I've been very happy with over the years. Nope, we dont get any mail in rebates like you guys do, but I'll check out the WD prices.

I always thought IBM made good hard drives, just never getting one when Western Digital was around the same price.

Thanks again

I do, amongst other things, a photo retouch and conversion service to dvd. I am running 5 hard drives totalling 500 Gigs, 24/7. They are all IBM (which are now IBM/Hitachi). If there was a possiblity of them being unreliable do you think I would trust so much data on them? Yes they did have problems with one model which was ironed out a long time ago, but I guess mud sticks eh ? I have built many machines and always install this drive, and have never had a return for drive failure.
But, you pays your money and takes your choice !! To my mind it is the Rolls Royce of drives, but that is only my opinion. I am shifting around a lot of data constantly from drive to drive, removing and installing in different systems via a caddy system and they have performed better than I could ever have hoped, and no, I do not work for IBM
