Hi

I'm about to get Alltime 2000 from Bulldog (I'm so happy !). We got 4 PC's so I'm looking for a nice 4-port router/modem combination. I have about £80-£100 to spend. I have a few other Q's for ya.

1. Is there any special security I'm gonna need to stop hackers etc ?

2. If I'm using one of the PC's is the router the only thing that needs to be on so I can get on the internet ?

3. We are getting a 2mb connection. So if all PC's are connected to the internet would the router split the 2mb's up so each PC is getting a 500kb connection ?

Sorry for all the Q's and thanks in advance,
Marcus

Try the Netgear DG814 , its a modem/router combo

1. The router will come with NAT, which is a basic layer of security as it shields all PCs behind it, but you are recommended to use a firewall on each machine, sucg as SyGate or ZoneAlarm.

2. The router stay on 24/7, so any one/or all PC can be power on and connect to the internet through it.

3. The 2MB is the total avaiable, meaning if 1 PC is on, it has the full speed, imagine it as a 4 lane road, when you are the only car, you can take up the whole road, when there are 4 cars, each car will take 25% of the total road.
(This only applys if all 4 PCs are downloading large files at the same time, if 3 users are just surfing web pages, they do not use up much bandwidth, so the 4th PC can download at the full 2mbps speed)

Honestly I have seen both good and bad about all of the major name routers so I would suggest simply going for the one that you can find the best deal on. (D-Link, Netgear, Lynksys).

I have had bad experiences with reliability with the linksys yet a friend of mine has had no problems. I am on my fourth linksys router at the moment!

Jester got right to the point, we have installed almost all major brands, and found that its a hit or miss, when the DG824M first came back into stock in March, almost all we installed with them had a problem of cutting out, switched to DLink and found half of them work and the other half not.
