looking for an external writer for laptop got usb+firewire,,,checked out previous post but wondering is there anything new,,,,whats the best any help appreciated.

Probably the best external drive that I can think of is the dual format Sony DRU510UL (not 100% sure on the model number). It is the exact same drive as the highly praised internal DRU510a drive.

True but it is refurbished and only writes to + format discs. That and it only is a 2.4x writer whereas the sony is a 4x writer. HPs reviews aren't nearly as good as Sonys.

is it possible to just use one of thaose external usb2 cradle things?

It is although people who have gone that route seem to run into additional trouble. Have you already bought an internal burner? Or were you considering buying an internal one and then getting a USB Case for it?

We should ask what kind of computer & operating system first too...

Anott asked about a USB external cradle which implys that he has (or wants) to get an internal drive and put it in the case to use as an external unit.

sorry to jump on apollo100's post with my questions.

jesterrace777 - no i haven't bought either an internal or external writer but i was thinking about getting a laptop and the usb cradle thing looked like a cheaper option.

cheers guys,been looking into the cradle option myself anott,got them on ebay for £49,,ive also got to get a pcmcia usb 2 card as my laptops only operating usb 1 again ebay for £25 new pioneer 106 about 170 so thats about £240,,,,,,,a decent external writers probably gonna cost about£300 so have been weighing up this option myself,,,,has anybody got an external eide writer in a usb case?are there any known probs with this type of set up???
