I am curious if anyone can tell me why the naming convention dvd5 and dvd9 is used. What do the 5 and 9 stand for? Is it just a rounding off of the disc capacity?

thanks

5= 4.7gb
9= 9.4 gb and they are pressed, meaning probably never be able to record on them.

a dvd5 is a single sided single layer disc
and a dvd9 is a double layer single sided disc

DVD5= 4.7GB = Single Layer Single Sided
DVD9 = 9.4GB = Dual Layer Single Sided

Actuall 9.4GB = DVD10. A DVD9 is 8.54 you loose some data capacity in using 2 layers as compared to two disctinct sides.

Also remember that for these purposes 1gig = 1*10^9 bytes and not 1*2^30.
