A few weeks ago I noticed that every time I went to burn a cd at max speed I would lose my buffer every time resulting in buffer underrun and a burn error. I was using my good old 12X LG 8120b drive that had, until that point virtually never failed me. I thought it was just my burner going bad so I upgraded to a 52X 24X 52X LG burner with buffer underrun protection. I installed it and the same thing happened. I'm running windows XP with an Athlon 2000+ processor. What could be causing this?

Hey I haven't seen a buffer underrun question in ages!
The cause of this problem is your PC not being able to provide a continuous data stream to the burner at the required speed. Methods to reduce buffer underruns are:
Defrag the Harddrive
Close down all applications except systray, explorer and the burning software
Don't burn 'on the fly' ie directly from a removable disc.
Also make sure that DMA is enabled on the burner

Well, I made sure DMA was enabled, shut down all other applications and I always burn directly from the HD and it still happens. Any other ideas?

I agree with Darkman. Something else you can try:

- Disable XP burning;

- Get ASPI driver update (http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/drivers_by_product.html?cat=/Product/ASPI-4.70) to update yours if you have not done so.

Well I've updated the ASPI driver and disabled xp burning and it still happens........i'm about ready to trash my computer.

= Have you run ASPI check to make sure the ASPI is properly installed?

- Did you use the latest version of Nero and enable buffer underrun protection?

- Did you defrag the HDD before burning as Darkman suggested?

- Sometimes moving the burner from Master to Slave or vice versa or to the other IDE channel will help.

just on the off chance that something is wrong with the way the system installed the Burner you can try deleting the IDE channel that the burner is on. ( as long as it isnt on the same one as the hard drive.) then reboot and let windows reinstall it. that is the only way I could get DMA to activate on my DVD Rom.

Yep, that's a possibility too. I thought of that but I eliminated it because he had changed to a new burner and still got the problem.

the few times that I expirienced this type of problem was right after I had changed DVD roms or burners. When I upgraded from a Toshiba M1502 to a toshiba 1612 the 1612 would only operate in PIO mode. which was killing the DVD playback. I tried everything even just uninstalling the Drive itself and rebooting and letting it reinstall. no luck. it wasnt until I deleted the secondary IDE channel and rebooted and let windows reinstall it that I got the drive to operate in DMA mode.

Well I changed the drive from slave to master and its working a 52X without a hitch, still don't know why, though. Thanks guys/gals for all your help.
