Can the XBOX play VCDs/SVCDs/DVD-R/ such? Also, what is the best modchip out for XBOX right now?

The xbox can only play those if you have the Samsung drive as this drive can play any media :)

so the regular xbox drive cannot play those formats even though you have the mediaplayer and the modchip?

well apparently they can, like jimbo says, you do need a samsung drive to play cd-rs, although ive never had xbox media player play one sucessfully,, as it keeps crashing, i do understand that you need to configure xbmp though to get it right, also in my opnion get the xecuter modchip, as these are superior chips, and the newer ones 2.1/2.2 dont need soldering , my opinion though.........................

i think you got it wrong m8. if your reffering to CD-r then your first answer is correct. xbox can play these VCDs/SVCDs/DVD-R/ such, but not out of the box. after chipping you'll need to install an application called XBMP(XboxMediaPlayer) then you can play these media.

Mod-chip to go for is Xecuter 2 ther are easy to solder and if you don't want to solder then get pogo pins add-on for these chip.

I don't know about vcd's but I stream all my divx movies from my pc

VCD files is *.dat files...
here the list from XBMP the media it plays:

i know you need a modchip, but do you have to replace the drive? and what about the cdrs? so i only have to use cdrws?

you can use cdr if you have added a pc dvd drive or if you have a samsung xbox drive. that is the only way that you can play cdrs. check out xbox-scene.com's tutorials if you want to add a pc dvd drive.
modchip doesn't really matter if you aren't going to use live. but the bios does, and the x2 4977 bios is the best.

I play my vcds from bin format stored on the pc, but of course u have option of burning bin to cdrw if u dont have a drive that plays cdr.
