I've search 1000 times for information on this with no luck. I can find information that tells me that most NEC players run both, but I don't want to buy a dvd-r and find out that I needed a dvd+. Can anyone help me out with this information, otherwise it looks like I'm just going to have to buy the Sony DVD+/-RW DRU-500AX. Which is twice the price of any single format burners.

I live in Australia, could there just be different product codes for Australia?

In the specs for the player it says it can play DVD video discs Video discs Audio discs and cd-r cd-rw discs with audio or mp3 files.

It states that it does not play cd-rom cd-extra cd-g photo-d and cd-i discs.

It is a region 4 player.

thanks for any help.

dvd-r are more compatable than +r, I really never heard of a dvd player that didnt read -r, but quite of few that couldnt read +r. So the chances that a dvd player can read a -r format are very high. If you want to be on the safe side then get the poineer a06(dual format),which is the way I would go and its way cheaper then the sony.

I've managed to find a sony for $500 Australian, which is about $330US. I think I better cover all bases and go for it.

You can get a Pioneer 106 for like $420-$450.

The Pioneer 106 is a dual format drive as well and is every bit as reliable as the Sony. Not to mention that it is a little bit cheaper. Either way I would start off with a quality DVD-R disc (Ritek dye) as you will find it a little bit cheaper than any DVD+R disc.
