View Full Version : Will this ever be possible with DVD-R technology?

To have DVD-R's (compatible with our current DVD Writers) to write slightly more than 4.7GB.

I was wondering if we will see the same pattern as CD-R technology:

650MB > 700MB > 870MB

DVD:
3.95GB > 4.7GB > ???

basically wondering how those 99minute CD-R's work, and if it could be applied to DVD-R

Oh it is already possible if you have lots of money. It's called a dual layered burner (DVD9 Burner). However it is unlikely that any will come down in price enough before another format replaces DVD.

BlUray is sure to be the next format, 23 gigs per disk. Who needs a double sided dvd when you get that much per disk?

bluray no way for a looo-ng time, unless its compatable with the millions upon millions of dvd players already sold and still selling vastly, then imho, its missed the boat and will be confined to niche markets like hdtv recorders or corporate use.

It still got a long way to go, since DVD is starting to become the new medium for movies, there would be no use to released Bluray anytime soon. Also consider how much would each blue ray disc cost per gig? Probably more then we can afford.

Technology is not delayed because of compatability issues. Phonograph player are still been sold ! I bought one recently to convert my cherished collection of LP to CD. Since it has a significantly smaller wavelength, I would imagine that the blu-ray would be backward compatible with our present red-lazer equipment.

sorry, not talking about technology delay just the take up of it by the masses as the next format. i`m sure technology has long since superceded bluray and its standards. red and blue seems to indicate two wavelengths, how can a red read a blue and vice versa, unless dual laser, if so how many dual lasers are sold today. at the end of the day it`s what wins the space under the masses tv sets that wins the format war, not the best or latest technology. imho bluray is being left at the starting gate, come to think of it, ive not seen a lot of it in the parade ring. lol..

With so many major companies investing in it I would figure that it would take over as DVD. Sony, Pioneer and a number of other major companies are backing Blu-Ray.
