kev269 Aug 18, 2003, 09:15 AM Hi,
I have some floppy disks which i used to create boot disks with. After I used them i deleted the files that were on it, but the disk isn't totally empty. There is still around 300 KB still taken up on the disk.
Does anyone know how to get rid of it and free up the disk totally?
Thanks
Kev
gooner Aug 18, 2003, 09:25 AM You need to go into my computer then tools, then folder options and then view and then tick 'show all files' then click ok/apply and then go into the floppy and delete the files - aklternatively format the floppys

kev269 Aug 18, 2003, 09:29 AM i just tried that, i did get a hidden file appear but i deleted it and there's still 270kb on the disk.
i also have one disk which shows it has 8.64 GB on it and the filenames on it have changed to garbled characters.
i also put in some disks and it says they have to be formatted.
if i format the disk will this help clear all the disks fully? or will i only be able to use the disk on the same computer that i format the disks?
Thanks
Kev
Insomniac Aug 18, 2003, 10:26 AM Either do a quick or full format and that will delete any files.
What do you mean by 'I also have one disk which shows it has 8.64 GB on it"? We aren't talking floppies here are we? Floppies only hold 1.44 mb unless they are compressed using something like Maxformat. Even then they only hold 1.6 mb.
kev269 Aug 18, 2003, 10:42 AM ye, i have one floppy disk which says that there is 8.64gb on it. i dont know why, its just some messed up disk that i wanna fix.
Insomniac Aug 18, 2003, 10:56 AM Well if its only a floppy and you can't do a full erase (format), then it's time to get another one. If we are talking floppies and not another type of media, then it's not a huge financial burden.
gooner Aug 18, 2003, 11:00 AM Bin it - as insomniac says 1.44mb or slightly larger - there is no way a floppy is capable of holding nearly nine gig -
andyr Aug 18, 2003, 12:13 PM I used to have a floppy problem similar to this - I'd write a file to a disk and it would then result in a filename with garbled characters and reporting some random amount of space was taken up - sometimes reporting 20 gig!
Obviously something was wrong so I just bought another floppy drive for £7 brand new and the problem disappeared.
It's usually cheaper and easier to buy a new floppy drive than fix an old one. I'd advise buying a new one just to ensure the old drive doesn't corrupt anything you really need.
kev269 Aug 18, 2003, 01:22 PM it was only that one disk showing 8.4gb, but just now i did a quick format, and its ok now, a new blank disk and it works fine as well.
merlin_the_magician Aug 19, 2003, 04:43 AM about the 300k on the floppy... you probably formatted these disks as "system disk", so the disk contains a few files like command.com that take up space.
Format them again as a normal disk
