hi all,
I just saw that apple got the new G5 out which is supposed to be the fastest pc ever made, which is based on a 64 bit CPU. this made me thinking and i remembered that some months ago i had heard that SMD had declared that they have produced a 64 bit CPU.
Have you heard anything about this? The thing is that i am going to buy a new pc in the comming months and i woiuld like to know for sure.
Thanks

AMD has been offering several Opteron's ranging from Opteron 240 (1.4GHz, 64-bit) to Opteron 246 (2.0GHz, 64-bit). Get a couple of them and a dual socket mobo and you'll be flying. But they're not cheap.

i have been looking around today about these, and yes i saw that the price is quite hight.
but since it will take me more than 4 months to get an upgrade i suppose that prices will start falling by then.
The most important think at the moment is that i am not sure about the O/S. MS said that it will produce a 64 bit verison of XP and Win 2003, but there is nth out yet. Does this mean that if you install a 32Bit Win xp will not work on the Opteron CPu? or that it will just not work as good as it should b.
Do you know if linux supports 64 bit cpu?
thanks

A 64-bit system will run 32-bit OS and apps even better than when you run those on a 32-bit machine. Besides, the trend is going to be 64-bit. So buying a 64-bit CPU/mobo combo now is something you may need to look at.

My dual Opteron 246 system runs both Win Server 2003 32-bit and 64-bit versions quite well and real fast. :)

so you have an opteron system.!
how much did it cost, and by observing things how much cheaper it might get a mid range, around 1.8-2.0GH, untill January?

I built it myself and carefully selected the cheapest but can be trusted stores (by verifying their credits on resellerratings.com) to order parts. It costs me almost $2,300 USD including everything (RAM, DVD burner, ...)

I think I will wait. But I am jealous also. I believe that M$ has "longhorn" to replace XP, and that is going to be 64 bit.

that the kind of setup my college needs, as we do loads of 3D cad stuff

as the moment we have 750mhz with 64MB ram, ill crash a machine several time a day, and have completely broken 3, of which 2 still haven't been fixed
