" Sony has released software called Drive Speed Selector (or DSS). For all of us who have been limited to 2x ripping, you can now select three different modes for your DRU-510A to operate in: Silent, Automatic, and Overdrive. acls

You have to fill out a survey first. According to the PDF that comes with the software, Overdrive mode allows for 12x ripping on single layer DVD-ROMs and 8x ripping on dual-layered DVD-ROMs. Compare this to silent mode (2x ripping on both) and automatic mode (2x rip on dual layer and 12x on single layer)."

12x times, yumm...

Looks good but wouldn't that put more wear and tear on the drive? Wouldn't it also still be a little bit faster if it were done by a seperate DVD-ROM drive.

DSS (Drive Speed Selector) is Sony software that allows you to optimize the read/write speed of your DRU-510A and DRX-510UL DVD/CD rewritable drives only. This software is available to you provided you take our on-line survey.

It optomizes the write too? How?

It just goes to show,Sony stands behind their drives! How often has Pioneer released a firmware upgrade, that helped?

Isnt it just software and not a firmwire?

Looks like it but I only have a 500a so I can't test it..

I guess you are right. It would be a lot better solution to make it a firmware upgrade. The more software used in a burn, the more chance for conflicts. If you get my point.

I downloaded it just for kicks, it has a warning on it that they aren't responsible for what happens to your equipment if you use it. Its small, about 350k
