Hey all
I read the post called "The Totally FREE & Easy DVD Backup Guide" and am lost at a point. i get lost at this point here:
"Once this has been done this is the main screen that you are faced with where all alterations are made to the movie and extras. As we are doing a movie-only disc we need to use the Re-author method, the button is highlighted below so we click on that" As you know it on the left hand side it says dvd..the menus, main movie, and then extras. What does this mean
"The movie only is still too big to be able to transfer to DVDR but if we remove all the subtitle streams and foreign sound streams it does lower it somewhat but it is still too large in this case. By moving the compression level of the movie from 0 though to level 4 the movie will now fit" What's 0 thourgh to level 4? Do i not add these or i'm lost. Thanks for help

Basically you have a DVD that is too large, you select reauthor mode and just the movie, thus removing the extra's, it is still too large, so you remove the subtitles and extra audio streams, then if it is still too large you must compress it, in the above case I guess on level4.

If you are having trouble with DVDShrink, then maybe you should try DVDxCopyXPress, way less options to deal with.

As celtic said the film needs to be compressed that is why the prog is called DVD "Shrink".

Each number is the compression level with "0" being exactly that.

You have two modes in the prog:- Full disc or Reauthor, with reauthor mode you can do movie only or add the menus too or whatever you like. Most people will use this method though to do "movie only" to get maximum quality for the movie itself.

If you need any more help with descriptions of DVD Shrink's functions then check out it's excellent helpfile, once used a few times though it is very simple in operation.

Why not use smartripper and select all files rip it to Hd then use clonedvd and make a full dvd backup with everything in it it worked great for me can't tell the difference.

Clone DVD isn't as good of a program as DVD Shrink. DVD Shrink gives you quite a few options and it is freeware.

And as good as Smartripper ever *was* it is a dead project that has not been updated for at least 18 months now. ;)

That is true, I don't know many people that are still using Smartripper.

Well the one answer to that kind of question is this - try it.

I could say it is not and has far fewer editing options but you might try it and think it's exactly what you need.

As most of the producers of transcoding software offer a free demo it's well worth playing around with them and seeing for yourself.

No it is so simple to use it does not really require one, try the prog help files if you are not sure about anything.
