isnt there a simple little programme that will let me open my file within win98 without all that office crap?

Access is the only program that can manipulate a .mdb file. That stands for ”Microsoft Data Base”. It is a very complex program for professionals only. It exist in the Office suite and can be installed with a lot of options or with all but against your HDD space.
