For franchise/owner mode - Madden

For gameplay and overall presentation - ESPN

They're the top two - and they're way ahead of the rest.

Gamespot concluded that, "In the end, ESPN NFL Football is truly the best playing football game available for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The responsive controls and gameplay mechanics are better than any other NFL football game available. That said, if you're a fan of the off-the-field options and gameplay modes found in Madden, you might find that ESPN's franchise mode, and other options, come up a bit short on the simulation side of things. Ultimately, though, the two games have pretty different styles that will appeal to different players. Fans of previous NFL 2K games will love ESPN NFL Football, while fans of Madden will probably still go with Madden. If you're on the fence, trying out both games is really the only way to know for sure, though you absolutely can't go wrong if you go straight for ESPN NFL Football."

ESPN IS THE GREATEST FOOTBALL AND for all you Madden lovers, I own both copies of the game and ESPN it #1. Read the reviews and play the game, you will never go back.

I'm new to ESPN (6+ years a Madden baller) and I have to say, it's a breath of fresh air. Highly recommended.

Hey, Madden 2004 is more like a Sims City with you controlling everything from ticket prices to the charge of popcorn and beer. Get you more in the game.

i also i have both Madden 2004 and ESPN NFL Football, and i must say that ESPN is more fun for me to play. Not only is the game fast paced, the animations are amazing. I would aslo recommend ESPN to you. Ive never played NFL Ferer 2004, so i dont know anything about it. The choice is yours. I'd say you should just go and rent out these and games and see which game is right for you.
