View Full Version : Is there a file limit for DVDs?

I’ve just bought a DVD writer (hasn’t arrived yet) and I was wondering if the was a limit to the number of files that can be written to a DVD (either format)?

At the moment I have eight CDs with about 3000 files on them. I was wondering if I could burn them all to just one DVD. The total space is approx. 4GB.

Any one know this?

Thanks in advance….

Jessica

You shouldn't have a problem. As long as you do not exceed the space available on the dvdr, it doesn't matter how many files you have.

Thanks for the reply Guys…

One question though…Why only 4.36GB? I thought DVDs were 4.7GB!

Cheers,

Jessica

This a sly trick the dvd manufacturers use

It 'll store 4.7 x 1000x 1000x1000 bytes but in windows 1GB is 1024 x 1024 x1024 bytes so actually it is about 4.36-4.37GB of files in windows

Also make sure you buy decent media cos this number can drop even lower for crappy media-

i did a similar thing (backed up 8 cds with 3800 or so files) onto 2 dvdr. I used Princo and my A05. Had no probs, just as the other posters have said, all you have to watch for is the size of the files and the capacity of your media...

p.s. What do you regard as ‘decent media’?

"p.s. What do you regard as ‘decent media’?"

that depends on what writer you have.

The drive I’ve ordered is a Sony DRU510A. What media would you recommend for that?

Riteks will work fine and are very reliable.

They will also be compatible with a wide range of standalone players, even the fussy ones.

I will second Riteks (and you won't find a shortage of others vouching for them either). They will work in even the pickiest DVD Players and are good right up to the limits of the disc. On several of them I have used all but 23 megs of space (which is nothing when you are talking about a disc that holds over 4GB). BTW which version of Windows are you running Jessica? If you don't have Windows 2000 or Xp you are going to run into a 4GB limitation problem.

I'm running Windows XP Pro. Is that okay?

As mentioned by PhilEnfield it doesn't get any better than XP Pro. Happy DVD Burning. ;)
